What changed
- Browse archives and recover selected files or folders in both native apps and the command line. Capture-time catalogs support library search.
- Individual-file readers cover FAT12/16/32, exFAT, bounded NTFS, classic HFS, HFS+ and ext2/3/4. APFS is detected but cannot yet be extracted.
- Import supported E01, fixed or dynamic VHD, and standalone VHDX images from the command line. Differencing images and active VHDX logs remain unsupported.
- Capture readable data sectors from optical and floppy sources. Audio tracks, subchannels and floppy flux are outside this support.
- Optional allocation-priority rescue reads allocated extents first, then sweeps remaining space. Windows can capture NTFS volumes through per-volume VSS snapshots.
- Preservation records, portable copy history, recovery-dependency notes and BagIt exports help document and hand off an archive.
- New captures use a 2.x licence. Reading, verifying, repairing, extracting and resuming existing captures remain free. ArchiveHive 2.0 continues to read earlier archives.
Staying current
ArchiveHive never checks for updates on its own. When you ask it to — from Licence and updates in the application, or with archivehive-cli check-updates — it reads one small file from this site that names the current version and tells you whether a newer one exists. Nothing is downloaded or installed for you. Choosing the moment to change a tool that runs against failing hardware belongs to the person doing the work.
Archive compatibility promise
ArchiveHive 2.0 continues to read, verify, mount, extract, and repair archives created by earlier ArchiveHive releases. New releases may add optional metadata, but they will not make an existing archive unreadable or silently rewrite it into an incompatible format.
If an incompatible archive-format change is ever necessary, it will use a new, explicit schema and will be called out before release. Existing archives will remain readable. Every archive also carries plain-text recovery instructions and copies of the published format specifications, so recovering the data does not depend on ArchiveHive remaining available.
